SFA theatre department presents ÔSix CharactersÕ

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - ÒDeceptively simple while at the same time deceptively complexÓ is how director Rick Jones describes Luigi PirandelloÕs ÒSix Characters in Search of an AuthorÓ which the Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Theatre will present Tuesday, Nov. 16, through Saturday, Nov. 20. The curtain will rise in W. M. Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The play is actually two plays in one, according to Jones, SFA assistant professor of theatre. The drama opens with a theatrical company preparing to rehearse a Pirandello play. The second plot is introduced when a family of six fictional characters, seeking to avoid an eternity of repeating the same unresolved story, interrupts the rehearsal in search of an author who can give them closure.

ÒAs long as the patrons can Ôbuy intoÕ the concept that the six characters are Ôreal,Õ and want to become fully actualized by having their story presented to an audience, the plot is easy to follow,Ó said Jones.

ÒThe complexity comes once you start trying to wrestle with the philosophies introduced,Ó the director continued. ÒThis play is the best known example of what Pirandello called Ôjuxtaposed planes of reality.ÕÓ

According to Jones, the play will appeal to a wide audience because it contains a variety of dramatic forms.

ÒIt is a combination of melodrama, farce and psychological thriller,Ó he explained.

ÒSix Characters in Search of an AuthorÓ is a part of the SFA Department of TheatreÕs Mainstage Series and is sponsored in part by Tipton Ford. It is suggested for mature audiences.
