Music Preparatory Division offers summer classes, camps and lessons
Monday, May 23, is the deadline for registering for an adult piano class which will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for eight consecutive Tuesdays, beginning May 31. Dr. Ping-Ting Lan, instructor in the Music Preparatory Division, will teach the 16-member class. The $120 fee includes all supplies. Harp students with at least one year of instruction may register for harp ensemble classes that will meet eight times beginning Monday, June 6. Cost is $160.00. Two different opportunities for keyboard students are available. Dr. Andrew Parr, SFA professor of music, and his wife, Linda, SFA instructor of music, are offering a piano duet camp Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24. Junior high students will meet from 11 a.m. to noon, and senior high students will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. The camps are limited to 16 students, and the registration deadline is Friday, June 10. Cost is $70. Dr. Parr will also offer Plucks, Pipes and Pianos Camp for students in grades eight through twelve who wish to explore and play harpsichord and organ. The camp will meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday, June 27, through Friday, July 1. The deadline to register is Friday, June 10. Cost is $75. Herbert Midgley, SFA instructor of music, will offer a guitar camp on Monday, July 11, through Thursday, July 14, and an electronic music camp on Monday, July 18, through Thursday, July 21. Both camps meet from 3 to 4 p.m., and each costs $40. Students in first through sixth grades may learn about the musical styles of the 20th century by attending a music discovery camp that culminates in a musical review. "Have a Blast With the Past" will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15. Cost is $65, and the registration deadline is Tuesday, July 5. Kindermusik Camps, designed for newborns through 5-year-olds and their adult caregivers, will be held Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29. Registration deadline is Monday, July 18. Kindermusik strongly emphasizes giving a child a "total music experience," said Karen Greer, certified Kindermusik teacher and instructor of each of these camps. Take-home materials are included in the cost of each camp. "Peek-a Boo, I Love You," for newborns through 18-month-olds, will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Cost is $75. "Zoo Train!," designed for children 18 months to 3 years, will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $110. "Confetti Days," for 3- to 5-year-olds, will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $110. The Music Preparatory Division also offers private music instruction in piano, voice, guitar, harp, flute, cello and Suzuki and traditional violin. "To accommodate families' summer schedules, students may register for four-, six- or eight-week sessions," explained Pat Barnett, Music Preparatory Division director.
