Registration open for SFA Music Preparatory summer lessons and camps

Registration open for SFA Music Preparatory summer lessons and camps

Registrations are being accepted for the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division’s summer private lessons and camps.

Private lessons on piano, voice, guitar, harp, flute, Suzuki violin, cello and violin are available and can be arranged around a family’s schedule, said Pat Barnett, director of the music preparatory division.

“We realize that our students may not be available every week during the summer, so we work with them in scheduling four, six or eight lessons at convenient times,” Barnett said.
Harp students with at least one year of experience may register for eight one-hour harp ensemble sessions. Cost is $160.

Spaces are still available for the second session of Showstoppers Choir camp, 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 7, through Friday, June 11. The camp is directed by Glen Miller, co-director of the SFA Showstoppers Show Choir and music teacher at Lufkin Slack Elementary School, and is open to first- through eighth-grade students interested in performance through singing and staged movement. The $65 registration cost includes a $20 materials fee.

Students interested in guitar may attend a camp from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, through Friday, July 2. Herb Midgley, SFA music lecturer, will direct the camp. Cost is $40.

Midgley will also direct a pop piano and computer lab camp from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9. Students will apply their classical piano skills to popular music, explained Barnett. Cost is $40.

Music Discovery Camp, open to children in first through sixth grades, will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9. Jennifer Weems, a veteran Music Discovery Camp teacher, will direct the camp. Cost is $65.

Younger children may attend one of three Kindermusik Adventure camps offered Monday, July 12, through Friday, July 16, by Karen Greer, certified Kindermusik instructor. The cost of each camp includes at-home materials.

“Peek-A-Boo, I Love You,” open to newborns through 18-month-olds, will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Cost is $75. Children 18 months to 3 years may attend “Creatures at the Ocean” from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $90. “On the Road,” open to 3- to 5-year-olds, will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $90.

Since space is limited in each program, Barnett encourages early registration. Registration forms are available on the division’s Web site, www.music.sfasu.edu/prep or in the Wright Music Building office. Barnett can be reached at (936) 468-1291.
