SFA to exhibit Geiselman’s “Sorrows of the Head”

“Sorrows of the Head," an exhibition of wood and steel sculptures by local artist Chet Geiselman, will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, at The Art Center, 329 E. Main St.

The exhibition, which is a joint presentation of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Department of Art, will run through July 1.

Geiselman said each of the 10 or so sculptures is an abstract figure, constructed mostly of wood, that stands approximately 10 feet.

"The body of work has evolved as I've been working on it this spring," Geiselman said. "The title comes from a line of a hymn, and the individual pieces have taken shape in tandem with occurrences in the world."

In creating his art, Geiselman employs woodworking and welding skills to manipulate the materials and also incorporates objects such as wooden crutches or metal tools into the sculptures.

"I choose the found objects based on their aesthetic beauty as well as for their literal and metaphorical functions," Geiselman said. "My work, like most artists’, has several levels of meaning."

After receiving degrees from the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Southern Illinois, Geiselman was employed as an art instructor and a studio artist.

Evidence of other lines of work can also be seen in Geiselman's art. He worked for eight years as a welder/machinist/fabricator in his father's welding shop, two years as a furniture design assistant, and a year as a woodworker/fabricator. Currently, Geiselman works at Red Suspenders Timber Frames where he regards the timber frames as large sculptures.

"I'm an artist no matter what I’m doing," Geiselman explained.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum, SFA Friends of the Arts, SFA Student Government Association and Texas Commission on the Arts.

Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.
