Summer theatre season opens with 'Sylvia'

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Theatre will open its 2005 Summer Repertory season with A. R. Gurney's "Sylvia" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in W. M. Turner Auditorium. It will be presented each evening through Saturday, June 25.

The comedy stars Nacogdoches native Stephanie Cozart, a professional actress and SFA alumna, who plays the title role of a dog adopted by a New York couple. Her owners are played by Justin Cole, Nacogdoches senior, and Veronica Blanco, Kingwood junior.

"This is an hysterical comedy," said Clarence W. Bahs, chair of the SFA Department of Theatre and the show's director. "The play is for all of us who believe as Charles Schulz did that 'happiness is a warm puppy' or that 'no one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as much as the dog does.'"

Due to adult language, the show is recommended for mature audiences.

Also included in the Summer Repertory season is "Trudi and the Minstrel" by Alan Cullen which will be presented Wednesday, July 6, Thursday, July 7; Friday, July 15; and Saturday, July 16.

"With a cast of over 20 outrageous characters--including an evil Baroness, a talking head, a dragon, a mermaid and various trolls and gypsies, "Trudi" is a delight for the entire family," said Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director.

The third show included in the season is "The Shadow Box" by Michael Cristofer which will run Friday, July 8; Saturday, July 9; Wednesday, July 13; and Thursday, July 14.

The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning drama focuses on three different patients and their loved ones who are dealing with terminal illness.

"It's a gallant and luminous play about dying, with an unexpected quota of laughs," said Allen Oster, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director. He recommends it for mature audiences.

Season tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Single tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
