SFA Opera Workshop to present ‘An Evening
of Summer Delight’
The SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music will present
“An Evening of Summer Delight” by the SFA Summer Opera Workshop
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, in Cole Concert Hall. Admission is free
and open to the public.
The participants, ranging from SFA sophomores to graduate students,
will present arias and scenes from traditional and contemporary operas.
According to Nita Hudson, SFA instructor of music, the concert serves
as a culmination of an intensive four-week workshop.
Dr. Deborah Dalton, SFA associate professor of music, has worked individually
with students on their arias, Hudson has offered instruction on stage
movement and dance, and Dr. Ron Petti, SFA director of accompanying,
serves as accompanist.
Ryan McDonald, graduate vocal performance student from Lorena, said
the workshop is designed to teach the students how to better communicate
with the audience.
“In an operatic setting, the performer must utilize movement and
facial expressions much more than in a recital or choral concert, so
the workshop is preparing us for professional experiences,” McDonald
continued.
Jacqueline Treviño, San Antonio sophomore, said she is looking
forward to the concert because it will give her a chance to express
her love for her art and bring enjoyment to the audience.
Including a variety of operatic works in the workshop has helped the
students learn about many different shows, McDonald explained.
“Similarly, anyone who attends the concert will become familiar
with a wide range of works within the art form,” McDonald said.
