SFA to present Chamber Music in the Pines Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the four concerts included in the Stephen F. Austin State University Chamber Music in the Pines Festival July 17 through 25 in Cole Concert Hall.

Each concert will have a different emphasis, but all will provide an intimate setting for the music, the musicians and the audience, said Dr. John W. Goodall, SFA professor of music and the festival's artistic director.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, "Oboe Quintet" by Sir Arnold Bax and "Clarinet Quintet in A major" by W. A. Mozart will be featured in a winds and string concert. Performers include SFA music faculty members Christopher Ayer and Jennifer Dalmas, assistant professors, on clarinet and violin, respectively; Goodall on oboe; and Evgeni Raychev, adjunct faculty, on cello. Other performers include David Hermann, associate principal violist of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Meredith Maddox, violinist for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, Dalmas, Maddox, Hermann and Raychev will present three sting quartets: "I Chisantemi (The Chrysanthemums)" by Giacomo Puccini, "String Quartet in C major" by W. A. Mozart and "String Quartet in F major" by Maurice Ravel.

Kae Hosoda-Ayer, piano instructor for the SFA Music Preparatory Division, will join the string players for a piano with strings concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 23. The program includes Felix Mendelssohn’s "Piano Trio in D minor" and Dmitri Shostakovich's "Piano Quintet."

The festival will conclude with an all-Bach concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25. Works to be performed include "Sonata for Viola da Gamba, Harpsichord and Basso Continuo in D major" and "Trio Sonata for Oboe, Violin and Basso Continuo in B flat major." Also, soprano Debbie Berry, SFA vocal instructor, and tenor Richard Berry, dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts, will sing arias from some of Bach's cantatas.

SFA Friends of Music will host a reception in the Cole Concert Hall lobby immediately following the final concert.

The festival is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. It is sponsored in part by Ed and Gwen Cole.

Tickets are available for either single concerts or the entire festival. Single event tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $5 for students and children. Season tickets are $30 for adults, $22.50 for seniors, and $15 for students and children.
