SFA to offer Kindermusik camps

The Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division will offer Kindermusik Adventure Camps for newborns to children 5 years of age Monday, July 12, through Friday, July 16. The camps will be taught in Room 275 of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus and will be taught by Karen Greer, certified Kindermusik instructor.

“Peek-A-Boo, I Love You,” a camp designed for newborns to 18-month-olds and their adult partners, will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Parents will learn new songs, lullabies and chants, and activities will include instrument play, American Sign Language and special parent-baby dances that stimulate the baby’s eyes, body and mind. Materials include a poster, “Peek-A-Boo, I Love You” baby book, compact disc and other special activity materials, such as a duck-shaped mirror and star-shaped sponge.

“Creatures at the Ocean,” a camp designed for children 18 months to 3 years, will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. Parents and caregivers will share in the learning experiences with the children.

Campers will be introduced to the seagull, crab, dolphin, octopus and whale and to beach activities such as beachball play, sand play and sheet-simulated waves.

“The children will sing delightful music, including a calypsonian tune, make music with unique instruments and even take home their own pair of specially designed seashell handle castanets for family music making,” said Pat Barnett, director of SFA’s Music Preparatory Division. Take-home materials include a set of five picture folders, story cards and a compact disc.

“On the Road,” a camp designed for children ages 3 to 5, will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Parents and caregivers will not be required to remain with this age group.

“This camp makes the most of a preschooler’s burgeoning imagination and ability to learn more words and solve problems,” said Barnett.

The students will take imaginary trips to summer vacation locations such as the carnival, a summer cottage and the beach and participate in arts and crafts activities related to each setting. Materials include a literature book featuring “Van Go,” a compact disc and an instrument.

The take-home materials provided in each camp encourage the parents to extend the children’s camp experience within the family, explained Barnett.

“Family involvement is the fundamental cornerstone of the Kindermusik philosophy since home is the most important place for a child’s learning to take root and grow,” she continued.

Greer has been a Kindermusik teacher and therapist for the SFA Music Preparatory Division for the past five years. She received her bachelor’s in music therapy from Sam Houston Sate University and teaches music at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School. She is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association.

The Kindermusik camps are a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music and the Music Preparatory Division.

Registration for “Peek-A-Boo, I Love You” is $75. “Creatures at the Ocean” and “On the Road” each cost $90.

Barnett encourages parents to register by July 7 so there will be time to order materials.
