SFA Steel Band to perform in concert

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Steel Band will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in Cole Concert Hall. The 12-member ensemble is directed by Dr. Scott Harris, director of percussion studies at SFA, and is comprised of both percussion majors and non-majors.

The concert will feature traditional pop, Caribbean and Latin favorites, including the traditional island tune "Maryanne," "Under the Sea" from the movie "Little Mermaid" and a Gloria Estefan medley. The band will also perform an arrangement of "Besame Mucho" by band member Kevin Rice, Vidor junior.

Harris said the program will also feature the high-energy SFA Steel Band horn section and the vocal talents of band members Stephanie Shing, Rowlett sophomore, and Willie Barnes, Legett junior. Rice and Alex Aucoin, Nacogdoches sophomore, will be featured on marimba solos.

The band's popularity has made it one of the most requested ensembles in the SFA Department of Music, according to Harris. The group has appeared at Chili's Restaurant, Scare on the Square, the Nine Flags Festival and the Nacogdoches Chili Cook-off.

Earlier this month, the Steel Band performed at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio which more than 20,000 Texas music educators attended.

Harris invites everyone to have a little springtime fun by putting on a Hawaiian shirt and joining the band for a memorable evening of fun, excitement and the traditional Limbo dance--a featured event at every SFA Steel Band performance.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
