Douglas student featured in orchestra concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Jordan Yerkes, son of Kevin and Megan of Douglas, and will be a featured performer in the Stephen F. Austin State University Chamber Orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Cole Concert Hall.

Yerkes, a freshman piano performance major at SFA, is one of the winners of the Department of Music's annual Aria / Concerto Competition. He and the Chamber Orchestra will play his winning audition piece, the first movement of Amadeus Mozart's "Piano Concerto, No. 21" K. 467.

Yerkes has been studying piano for 10 years, first with Rachel Anderson, then with Linda Parr through the SFA Music Preparatory Division. Yerkes is currently studying with Dr. Andrew Parr, SFA professor of music.

Yerkes is a two-time first place winner in the East Texas Piano Solo competition and has received several medals through the National Guild of Piano Teachers. In 2003, he won first place at the district level of Farm Bureau's Talent Find contest and second place at the state competition.

The Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Jeff Jacobsen, SFA assistant professor of music, will also perform pieces by Edward Elgar and Sergei Prokofiev.

Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor of music, will be the featured violinist on Henri Wieniawski's "Legend," and tenors from SFA A Cappella Choir and Choral Union will join the orchestra in presenting a portion of "Cantata No. 140" by J. S. Bach.

The concert, which is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music, concludes the Chamber Orchestra's spring tour to Shreveport, Bossier City, Marshall and Longview.
