SFA Professor’s Art On Display
"Charles Jones: Portraits," an exhibition of 10 large-scale woodcut portraits by Charles Jones, Stephen F. Austin State University Regents Professor of art, is currently on display at The Printmaker’s Gallery at Arkansas State University. The portraits are of artists, writers and musicians who were influential or inspirational to Jones, including James Joyce, William Butler Yeats and Willa Cather. The exhibition has been shown in various configurations five times in the past four years, according to Jones. He began the series about five years ago with a work that was meant to pay tribute to artist Leonard Baskin. That piece led to another of artist Kathe Kollwitz, and then on to other writers and visual artists, Jones explained. Jones has had major exhibitions at the Tyler Museum of Art, the Museum of East Texas, Longview Museum and Arts Center and the Galveston Arts Center. His exhibition, "The Vietnam Suite," toured the Midwest under the auspices of the Mid-America Arts Alliance and also toured England, the Netherlands and France. A member of the SFA faculty since 1971, Jones teaches printmaking, drawing and Mexican art history. He is also the director and master printer for SFA’s LaNana Creek Press, which annually publishes a major title. Jones received his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University, his master’s degree from New Mexico Highlands University and his master of fine arts from the University of the Americas in Mexico.
