Volunteer Opportunity Combines Enthusiasm for Plants and Children
The Stephen F. Austin State University Mast Arboretum is offering area residents an opportunity to enjoy gorgeous plants and great people in the garden for the spring 2004 Garden Guide training class. This class prepares volunteers to give guided tours of the Arboretum to area school children. Garden Guides introduce small groups of students to the arboretum through hands-on activities. According to education coordinator Elyce Rodewald, the guides might be found encouraging students to explore the inside of a flower, learn about honeybee communication, take a closer look at soil, investigate compost, or measure a tree. Rodewold said advanced horticulture knowledge is not necessary, but a love and appreciation for energetic, curious children are vital. Training will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 23 – 26 in Room 118 of the Agriculture Building at SFA. To register for the class, or for more information, contact Rodewald at (936) 468-1832 or by e-mail at erodewald@sfasu.edu. ###
