Guest Pianist To Present Lecture, Recital at SFA
The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and Department of Music will present guest pianist Stanley Potter in a lecture-recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Music Recital Hall of the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building. Among the pieces Potter will be playing are J. S. Bach’s "Prelude and Fugue in E flat minor," Franz Schubert’s "Impromptu in G flat major," Maurice Ravel’s "Pavane pour une infante défunte" and several works by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Potter grew up in East Texas where his first piano teacher was Jessie Deane Trulove of Tyler. He continued his studies with Stefan Bardas at the University of North Texas and Silvio Scionti at Michigan State University where he received his master of music degree in piano. As a Fulbright Scholar, he studied with Yvonne Lefebure of the Paris Conservatory and became a scholar of the French pianistic technique and noted interpreter of the music of French composers. Subsequent teachers included Leonard Shure and William Dopmann at the University of Texas. His own students have concertized in Dallas, Los Angeles, Arkansas, Puerto Rico and Taiwan. As a recitalist, Potter has performed a large repertoire, including works by composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Louis-Claude Daquin and Paul Dukas, and has presented all-Bach and all-Chopin recitals. He has appeared as an orchestral soloist in such works as Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Emperor Concerto" and "Choral Fantasy," Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "Concerto in D minor," Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" and Robert Schumann’s "Concerto." Potter has been an active adjudicator in several states and recently retired from the faculty of West Texas State University where he taught for 34 years. While visiting SFA, Potter will conduct a master class for SFA piano students on Friday, Feb. 27. Admission to the recital is free. For more information, please call (936) 468-6407.
