Guest Trombonists To Present Recital at SFA
The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music will present trombonists Vern and Jan Kagarice in a guest artist recital at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Cole Concert Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. Included on the program will be pieces by Jean-Michel Defaye, Franz Strauss, Frigyes Hidas and Ernst Sachse. Debra Scott, trombone and euphonium instructor at SFA, and Jonathan Stoby, junior trombone performance major from Belton, will join the Kagarices on one piece. Prior to the performance, the Kagarices will conduct a master class for SFA trombone students. "It is a great opportunity for the students to be able to work with both Vern and Jan," Scott said. "Known internationally for their teaching and playing, the Kagarices are truly two of the most prominent trombone teachers and players in the world." Professor Vern Kagarice joined the University of North Texas faculty in 1983 after serving 16 years at Youngstown State University. He holds degrees from Bethany College and Indiana University. He was principal trombonist in the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1983 and has been a member of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra since 1979. He also has performed with the Dallas Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Dallas Opera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Summit Brass. He has appeared at the International Trombone Workshop and at universities and music education conventions as a clinician and soloist. His international activities have taken him to Canada, Japan, Brazil, Netherlands, England, France, Germany, Finland, Poland and Denmark. Jan Kagarice has served as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas since 1998 and has been a visiting professor at the Hochschule fur Musik in Detmold, Germany, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of North Texas. Jan is a certified Montessori teacher with five years' experience both in the classroom and as director. She has performed with the Dallas Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Chatauqua Symphony and the Boston Philharmonic. She was founder and bass trombonist of the trombone quartet Prisma. She has appeared in concert or as lecturer at the International Trombone Festivals, the British Trombone Symposium, the International Women's Brass Conference, the Texas Music Educator's Association Convention and the Internationale Posaunen Verienigung. Vern serves as membership manager of the International Trombone Association and managing editor of the association’s journal. Jan serves as the assistant managing editor of the journal and as a member of the Board of Advisors and the Pedagogy Committee. The concert is sponsored in part by the Selmer and C. G.
