Annual Science Meeting Scheduled at SFA
The 106th annual Texas Academy of Science Meeting will be held Feb. 27 through 29 at Stephen F. Austin State University. The speakers for the event include Larry McKinney, president of the Texas Forestry Association, Beth Ann Brady, the 2003 Outstanding Texas Science Educator, and Dr. Jonathan A. Campbell, the winner of the 2003 Distinguished Scientist Award. Campbell, assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, will present “Herpetologist in the Mist: My Life Among Guerrillas.” He has studied the taxonomy, systematics and biodiversity of herpatofauna of Mexico and Central America, received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and other organizations, and authored five books and 114 papers. Cambell received a doctoral degree from the University of Kansas in evolution and ecology and joined the UTA faculty in 1983. McKinney, will present “Water, Water Everywhere” at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Brady is a Hillcrest Elementary School enrichment teacher in science and technology for grades K-12. In 2001 and 2002, she received $17,500 in district grants. The Local Host Committee members are Dr. William Clark, chair and professor of mathematics and statistics at SFA; Dr. Chris Barker, assistant professor of geology at SFA; Dr. Brent Burt, assistant professor of biology at SFA; Dr. Alyx Frantzen, assistant professor of chemistry at SFA; Dr. Ernest Ledger, professor of geology; Dr. Norm Markworth, professor of physics and astronomy at SFA; Dr. Ennis McCune, professor of mathematics and statistics at SFA; Dr. LaRell Nielson, assistant professor of geology at SFA; Dr. Josephine Taylor, assistant professor of biology at SFA; and Dr. Steve Wagner, assistant professor of biology at SFA.
