SFA Professor To Perform Jazz Trumpet
Dr. Gary Wurtz, assistant professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a jazz trumpet recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in Cole Concert Hall. Wurtz will perform movements from the "Toot Suite for Trumpet and Jazz Piano" by French composer and pianist Claude Bolling and "A Jazz Sonata" by Danish jazz trumpeter and composer Allan Botchinsky. Four members of the SFA music faculty will accompany Wurtz. Dr. Stephen Lias, asssistant professor, and Dr. Ron Petti, assistant professor and director of accompanying, will play piano. Dr. Jeff Jacobsen, assistant professor and director of orchestral studies, will play bass, and Scott Harris, instructor and director of percussion studies, will play drums. In addition to teaching trumpet, Wurtz serves as the director of the Swingin' Aces, SFA's top jazz band and the Trumpet Ensemble. He currently serves as the principal trumpeter with the Orchestra of the Pines and performs with the Pineywoods Wind Quintet. Wurtz also performs with the Fort Worth-based Bluebonnet Brass and appears as the jazz trumpet soloist on the group's most recent compact disc "Jazz 'n Brass." He has recorded with the late Darrell Holt, Richard Giangiulio and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. Wurtz received his bachelor's degree from West Texas State University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas. The recital is a presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For more information, call (936) 468-6407.
