Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces to Perform at SFA

The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces, Stephen F. Austin State University’s jazz bands, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, and Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Cole Concert Hall.

Under the direction of Dr. Gary Wurtz, assistant professor of music at SFA, The Swingin’ Axes will perform Hank Levy’s "Pegasus," an arrangement of "On a Clear Day," and Sammy Kahn’s "Time After Time."

The Swingin’ Aces will play Cole Porter’s "You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To," an arrangement of "Sweet Lorraine," and a medley of Count Basie tunes. Debra Scott, SFA instructor of music, directs the ensemble.

The two bands will present the same program on both nights in order to accommodate the large audiences that usually attend the bands’ concerts, according to Bobbie Ann Anderson, fine arts ticket office manager.

"Attendance at both fall concerts was great," Anderson said. "Cole Hall simply won’t hold all the people who want to hear the bands."

The concert is a joint presentation of the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
