A Cappella Choir to Perform at SFA
The Stephen F. Austin State University A Cappella Choir will present its "Homecoming Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in Cole Concert Hall. The premiere vocal ensemble at SFA will present the same program on a tour of regional high schools and community colleges Feb. 24 through 26. "We use the annual tour as a recruiting tool for potential music majors," said Dr. Tim King, director. "This year we will visit Henderson, Tatum, Longview, Tyler and Kilgore." The program is varied but consists primarily of American art music, traditional songs and spirituals, King said. Among the selected works are "Agnus Dei" by Samuel Barber; an arrangement of the spiritual "Give Me Jesus;" and a traditional folk song, "Shenandoah." Mike Tyer, SFA graduate student from Spring, will serve as guest conductor for part of the program. The choir will continue to work on several of the pieces throughout the spring semester in preparation for their European tour May 21-31. The 45-member choir will visit Vienna, Salzburg and Venice. "We have been invited to sing a concert at the Bergkirche Rodaun as part of the 1000-year Vienna city anniversary, and in the International Music Festival at St. Antonio Cathedral in Marositca, Italy, near Venice," said King. "Everyone involved in the trip is so excited. We are only three months away from sharing a bit of East Texas with the rest of the world." The concert is a joint presentation of the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
