Children's series announces season

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Musical adaptations of award-winning children's literature, entertaining lessons on scientific principals and a marionette theater are included in the upcoming season of the Stephen F. Austin State University Children's Performing Arts Series. All performances are in W. M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

"We've got an outstanding season lined up for our area students," said Diane Flynn, series director. "Each year more than 9,000 people attend our daytime performances, and we anticipate excellent crowds this year as well."

The season will open Friday, Oct. 14, with the Dallas Children's Theater's production of "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales," a musical adaptation of Jon Scieszka's Caldecott Honor Book by the same title.

"The Dallas Children's Theater, recognized as one of the top five children's theaters in the nation, remains true to Scieszka's stretching, twisting a turning of classic fairy tales. Our audiences are in for a top-notch, hilarious performance, " Flynn said.

The show, which is recommended for third through 12th graders, will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The world-renowned Salzburg Marionette Theater will present an abbreviated English version of Englebert Humperdink's "Hansel and Gretel" at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30.

"This is a great way to introduce students to opera," Flynn said. "They already know the story of Hansel and Gretel, they'll marvel at the intricate marionettes and they'll be exposed to a great musical work."

The event is recommended for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

On Friday, Feb. 3, ArtsPower National Touring Theatre will present "Amber Brown Is Not a Crayon." The musical is based on the best-selling series by Paula Danzinger and is recommended for first through fifth graders.

"This age group should easily identify with feisty Amber, a third-grader who has to struggle with her best friend's move to Alabama," Flynn said.

Performances will be at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

"For our fourth show of the season, we're bringing back the ever-popular 'Super Scientific Circus' on Friday, March 3," Flynn said. "Kindergartners through high school seniors love watching Mr. Fish and Trent the Mime prove scientific principals through the use of amazing circus skills."

Performances will be at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The season will close with American Family Theater's "Wizard of Oz" on Monday, May 1.

"This original musical adaptation of L. Frank Baum's book, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' has thrilled audiences nationwide with spectacle, song and special effects," Flynn said. "Students will recognize the familiar characters and storyline."

The show is recommended for students in kindergarten through sixth grade and will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Tickets to any performance on the series are $6 for individuals and $5 each for groups of 20 or more. Season tickets are $24 each.

"Teachers and parents are already calling to order tickets to the various shows," said Flynn. "We seat customers according to the date we receive payment or a purchase order, and an overwhelming majority of last season' s shows sold out."

The Children's Performing Arts Series is sponsored in part by Framesaver.
