University to hold Children's Chorus auditions

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Area students in third through fifth grades may audition for the SFA Children's Chorus between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus. The chorus is sponsored by the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division.

Open to singers who demonstrate vocal talent and musical aptitude, the community choir supplements the choral education and performance opportunities available to young people in the East Texas area, explained Pat Barnett, division director.

"Choir on this level is an intensive and challenging program, offering participants intrinsic rewards and a great deal of fun," she continued.

The choir will meet weekly beginning Monday, Sept. 12, from 5:15 to 6:30, in the Wright Music Building and present concerts in December and May. Cost is $120 per semester.

Jennifer Weems, organist and children's choir director at First Christian Church in Nacogdoches, will serve as director. She has directed the Music Discovery Camps offered through the SFA Music Preparatory Division for the past five years and maintains a piano studio at Encore Music.

Saturday's auditions are held in conjunction with the division's new student registration. If interested students are unable to attend at that time, parents may e-mail Barnett at pbarnett@sfasu.edu or call her at (936) 468-1291.
