Percussion Ensemble to perform
Under the direction of Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of music, the 14 members will perform works from a wide variety of percussion and musical styles. The concert will open with "Quiet" by David MacBride. "This is an exciting and aggressive theatre piece that uses traditional drum playing combined with vocals and choreography," explained Harris. A highlight of the concert will be William Price's "Boogaloo: Rough and Tumble," which was the third place winner in the 2004 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest and is based on New Orleans funk and soul rhythms. Other works to be performed are a marimba chorale, a new percussion quintet and some traditional African drumming pieces that will include rhythmic improvisations by many of the student members. The concert will close with the entire ensemble performing a calypso tune by Arthur Lipner called "City Soca." The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
