SFA poultry judging team brings home awards


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Poultry Judging Team recently brought home team and individual awards from the 58th U.S. Poultry & Egg Association National Poultry Judging Contest in Baton Rouge, La.

The SFA team competed against teams from 12 other universities and won three trophies at the event, including fourth high-point team in the breed selection division, fifth high-point team in the market products division, and fourth high-point team overall.

Individual award winners were Ben Applegate, a junior poultry science major, placing as the second high-point individual in the market products division and Katie Brewster, agriculture development junior, placing as the fourth high-point individual in the production division. Brewster had a perfect score in this division.

Crystal Smith coaches the team and is a graduate student in the SFA Department of Agriculture working with Drs. Dale Perritt and Tim Cherry. A 2000 graduate of Central Heights High School, Smith competed in poultry judging as an undergraduate at Texas A&M University.
