Stem cell information to be presented at SFA Burr Lecture


The chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Medical University of South Carolina will present the 23rd annual J.H. Burr Jr. Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, April 25, in the University Center Twilight Ballroom at Stephen F. Austin State University. A reception with refreshments will begin at 6 p.m.

Dr. Roger R. Markwald will present "Stem Cells: From Adam's Rib to Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine." Markwald also has served as the director of the Cardiovascular Developmental Biology Center at the university since 1992.

He graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree from California State Polytechnic University and was named Alumnus of the Year in 1998. He earned a master's degree and doctorate from Colorado State University and completed postgraduate training at Medical University of South Carolina.

Markwald teaches courses in medical and dental histology, cell biology and medical embryology.

He received the Lyndon Baines Johnson Research Award presented annually by the Texas affiliate of the American Association for Outstanding Research in Cardiovascular Biology and has served as chair of the American Association of Anatomists strategic planning committee since 1991.
