SFA faculty trombonist to present recital

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Deb Scott, Stephen F. Austin State University assistant professor of music, will present a faculty trombone recital at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in Cole Concert Hall. Ron Petti, SFA director of accompanying, will provide piano accompaniment.

The recital's program includes a wide range of compositions that feature the trombone's capabilities, said Scott.

Scott will perform Donald Hunsberger's arrangement of "The Carnival of Venice" by Jean-Baptiste Arban.

"This is a virtuoso piece written by the greatest trumpet player in the 19th century. However, I will be performing it on slide trombone," explained Scott.

Scott will also perform two pieces by Derek Bourgeois: "Coat de Bone" and "Concerto."

"The first is a fun unaccompanied piece with unexpected twists and turns, and the second is a beautiful concerto featuring an extremely fast third movement," Scott said.

Contemporary techniques such as circular breathing and simultaneous singing and playing will be employed as Scott performs a theater piece, "Sequenza V" by Luciano Berio.

Also included on the program is "Elgia" by Grigori Kalinkowitsch, "a beautiful slow, melodic piece," according to Scott.

Scott joined the SFA faculty in 2000 where she teaches trombone and bass trombone and is the director of The Swingin' Aces jazz band.

She is a member of the Orchestra of the Pines and the Longview Symphony. She was recently featured as part of the International Trombone Festival's Cramer Trombone Choir, an international group of university trombone teachers.

Prior to coming to SFA, Scott was the director of bands at Wharton College and performed frequently in the Houston area as the lead trombonist for the Ronnie Renfrow Big Band and as a freelancer in the jazz, salsa and classical styles.

Scott has also been a member of the Twentieth Century Unlimited Orchestra in Santa Fe, N.M., the New Mexico Music Festival Orchestra in Taos, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Greeley (Colorado) Philharmonic and the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth Circus Band.

Scott earned her doctorate in trombone performance from the University of North Texas, her master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado and bachelor's degrees in music performance and music education from Texas Tech University.

The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
