SFA faculty flutist to present recital

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Diane Boyd Schultz, Stephen F. Austin State University associate professor of music, will present a faculty flute recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, in Cole Concert Hall.

Schultz said she has selected a varied program of pieces not commonly heard that demonstrate the sonic capabilities of the flute.

As a soloist, Schultz will perform "Lookout" by Robert Dick, a piece that was commissioned by the National Flute Association in 1989.

"'Lookout' will be an interesting piece for the audience since it employs non-traditional sounds and techniques such as singing while playing and key clicks," Schultz said.

Pianist James Pitts, SFA accompanist, will join Schultz in playing "Sonata for Flute and Piano," a piece SFA assistant professor Stephen Lias wrote for the duo in 2003. Pitts and Schultz will also collaborate on "Achat Sha'alti" and "Ufaratsta" by Paul Schoenfield.

Debbie Berry, SFA instructor of music, will join Schultz in performing Harry Freedman's "Toccata for Flute and Soprano Voice." Clarinetist Christopher Ayer, SFA assistant professor of music, will join the women in performing Aaron Copland's "As It Fell Upon a Day."

Schultz will also perform Thea Musgrave's "Narcissus for Solo Flute and Digital Delay."

"The work is based on the Narcissus legend, with the flute portraying Narcissus, and the electronic music portraying his reflection," explained Schultz. "It's a very descriptive piece, and the digital delay and the other sound manipulations add other dimensions to the music."

Schultz has been a member of the SFA faculty since 2000 and is also the principal flutist of the Orchestra of the Pines and a member of the Stone Fort Wind Quintet. She also performs as flutist and piccoloist of the Shreveport and Longview Symphony Orchestras.

Previously, she worked with the St. Louis Symphony, Dallas Bach Society, Terre Haute Symphony and Richardson Symphony Orchestras.

She is a prizewinner of several national and international competitions, including the Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition and the National Federation of Music Clubs Orchestral Winds Competition.

A Rotary International Scholar, Schultz studied at McGill University in MontrŽal, and she has received grants to pursue her interest in studying and commissioning new works for flute and piccolo by American composers.

The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or 888-240-ARTS.
