SFA faculty to present flute and piano recital

Drs. Diane Boyd-Schultz and Andrew Parr, both members of the music faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a flute and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, in Cole Concert Hall.

The duo will perform Mozart's "Rondon in D Major," Francis Poulenc's "Sonata for Flute and Piano," Franz Schubert's "Theme and Variations on Die Schone Mullerin" and Robert Muczynski's "Sonata for Flute and Piano."

"This is truly a chamber recital," said Boyd-Schultz. "While the pieces are all taken from the standard flute repertoire, the piano parts are just as difficult and important as the flute parts," she continued.

The coordinator of flute studies and associate professor of music at SFA, Boyd-Schultz received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and her master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of North Texas.

She has established her career through performances in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and France. A prizewinner in numerous competitions, including the Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition and the National Federation of Music Clubs Orchestral Winds Competition, she has appeared four times as an invited performer at National Flute Association conventions.

Currently principal flute of the Orchestra of the Pines, she also has performed as principal flute of the Terre Haute Symphony and with the Shreveport Symphony and Dallas Bach Society orchestras. She has received several grants to pursue her interest in studying and commissioning works from living American composers.

Parr, professor of music at SFA, received his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Kent State University and studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria, as a Fulbright Scholar. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from Yale University.

Since joining the SFA faculty in 1983, Parr has performed extensively in solo, chamber and concerto settings. He has performed Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4" with the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, Aaron Copland's "Piano Concerto" with the Belgrade Philharmonic in the former Yugoslavia, Prokofiev's "Piano Concerto No. 3" with the Longview Symphony, Chopin's "Concerto No. 2 in F Minor" on tour with the San Antonio Symphony and with the Orchestra of the Pines, and Beethoven's "Triple Concerto" as a member of the Sylvan Chamber Ensemble. In 1999 he was the featured soloist with the Orchestra of the Pines in Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy, Op. 80."

In 1991 Parr was invited to judge piano examinations in several cities throughout Taiwan and to teach in Seoul, Korea. He is an active member of the Sylvan Chamber Ensemble, which is listed on the Texas Commission of the Arts touring roster. He also performs in a duo-piano team with his wife, Linda Parr.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music.
