SFA bands to present annual concert in the park
The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Music will present its annual Concert in the Park at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, in the Free Speech Area of the SFA campus. Patrons may bring lawn chairs or blankets to the wooded area between the University Center and the Music Building to enjoy the free outdoor concert that has become a family favorite, said Fred J. Allen, director of bands at SFA. Kappa Kappa Psi, the honorary band fraternity, will sell hamburgers and all the trimmings for $5. Sean Lipscomb, Arlington graduate student, will direct the Concert Band; Steven Parkman, interim director of the Lumberjack Marching Band, will lead the Symphonic Band; and Allen will conduct the Wind Ensemble. Each band will present several pieces. Program highlights include Clifton Williams’ “Symphonic Suite,” a variety of marches, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” and “The Great Gate Kiev” from Modest Moussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” In case of inclement weather, the bands will perform in the Band Hall, Wright Music Building Room 121.
