FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Susan Hammons–April 14, 2004 (936) 468-2041
SFA board committee to address Chief Caddo issue
Chief Caddo will not be on the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents quarterly meeting agenda April 20, but rather will be considered first by a committee of the board. Kenneth James, board chair, said today that he referred the Chief Caddo issue to the Academic and Student Affairs Committee and asked the committee to report back to the full board. James said he had not set a deadline for that report. A long-time tradition, the 7 1/2-foot wooden statue is awarded to the winner of the annual SFA-Northwestern State University football game. At the board’s February meeting, two employees and an SFA graduate asked regents to do away with the chief because they said it offends native Americans. -30-
