Lufkin resident named director of SFA research office
Dr. Carrie Hughes Brown of Lufkin is the new director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Stephen F. Austin State University. Brown has taught at university, community college, and high-school levels and has 15 years of experience in the administration of state and federal grants, including management of an annual federal discretionary budget of more than $8 million for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. “We are fortunate to have someone with Dr. Brown’s background and considerable skill to join us at SFA,” said Dr. David Jeffrey, associate vice president for graduate studies and research. “In addition to her outstanding work experience, Dr. Brown comes highly recommended as one who is respected for her work ethic and ability to work well with others. I know that faculty, staff, administrators, regents and others will find her to be a great asset to them and to the university.” Brown previously served as director of a state leadership consortium for the Region 5 Education Service Center in Beaumont. She was responsible for the evaluation of the state-wide Texas Tech Prep initiative, which allows high schools students to begin preparing for a technical career through dual credit and advanced placement programs. Prior to her work with Region 5, Brown served as a program director of curriculum and professional development for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. She managed 27 regional grants, supervised the activities of three state agencies and provided leadership in interpreting state and federal policies and procedures. A native of Dallas, Brown earned a bachelor’s degree with honors and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. She has served as a consultant and as an adjunct faculty member at Angelina College and Austin Community College.
