High School Students Can Earn College Credit at SFA Summer Academy

Stephen F. Austin State University is accepting applications for its Summer Academy, a new program allowing high school students to earn college credit while learning about the environment and various areas of the arts.

The first course, Environmental Systems: Ecological Investigation and Analysis, is scheduled June 10-22. It will focus on natural geologic and biologic systems in the Nacogdoches area and interruptions to those systems caused by human modifications of land and water.

The second course, Humanities: Thinking and Writing About the Arts, is scheduled July 8-19. Students will learn to evaluate and appreciate various art genres and attend with faculty SFA Gallery programs, the Chamber Music in the Pines Festival and the SFA Summer Repertory Theatre.

The academy can give high-schoolers an academic edge, enhance their academic resume and help them with the college admission process, according to Monique Cossich, executive director of enrollment management. The small class sizes also allow students to closely interact with faculty and fellow students and give them a unique introduction to university life.

Cost is $50 for each course, if a student’s high school will award dual credit. The cost will be approximately $400 for other students. Meals are extra, and students may either eat in campus dining facilities or bring a lunch.

Only students who will complete their sophomore or junior year this spring may apply. Students also must have a minimum score of 1010 on the SAT, 21 on the ACT or 101 on the PSAT, or be enrolled in an honors or gifted-talented program. Each course is limited to 20 students.

The application deadline is April 20. Accepted students will be notified by May 1 and must submit their payment by May 15.

For more information and an application, contact the SFA Office of Admissions, (936) 468-2504 or e-mail: admissions@sfasu.edu.
