Guest ceramist to present slide lecture at SFA
The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and Department of Art will present a retrospective slide lecture by guest artist Richard Notkin from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in Room 106 of the SFA Art Building. The lecture is free and open to the public. According to Piero Fenci, professor of art at SFA and founder of the ceramics area’s visiting artist series, Notkin is internationally recognized as being on the cutting edge of his field. “In addition to giving the slide lecture, Richard will be conducting a workshop and demonstrations with our art students. We are proud to offer them this opportunity to meet and work with a professional artist of Richard’s caliber,” Fenci said. Notkin is a full-time studio artist who lives and works in Helena, Mont. His series of Yixing (China) inspired teapots and ceramic sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are included in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan. Notkin has received three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Notkin’s work has been represented by Garth Clark Gallery in New York since 1983. For more information on the slide lecture, please call (936) 468-1131.
