SFA Pre-Dental Hygiene Program

OVERVIEW:

Dental hygienists are trained to evaluate a patient’s dental health. Their duties include taking x-rays, cleaning patients’ teeth and applying fluorides and sealants to teeth. Dental hygienists are responsible for providing dental health education, including topics such as oral hygiene, selecting appropriate toothbrushes, the use of dental floss, and how diseases such as diabetes affect a patient’s oral health.

Two years of college at an accredited school is necessary to become a dental hygienist. There are some university based dental hygiene programs that offer a bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees. Dental hygienists must be licensed to practice in the State of Texas. The State Board of Dental Examiners administers the licensing exam.

The average annual salary of a beginning dental hygienist in Texas is more than $28,000. Due to the current shortage of dental hygienists in Texas it is possible for one to earn $40.00 per hour for even part time work.

Related career opportunities within the general field of dentistry include dental assistant, dental laboratory technician, and dentist.
