If your student doesn't know what he or she wants to do yet, that's OK. SFA has an advising center for undecided majors to provide academic guidance through personal attention and encouragement. If your student is interested in online courses, you can get information about SFA’s distance education courses. Choosing to pursue graduate studies is a big decision – help your student gather information at the Graduate School. Jack Bucks is a student Stored Value Card program at the University. Parents and students can add money to an account held by the University for the student's use. Students can then spend Jack Bucks at any participating merchant on or off campus. Students join the free program and can use their University ID card to swipe wherever Jack Bucks are accepted. Jack Bucks remaining in a student's account after he or she graduates will be refunded, less any debt owed to the University. Parents can use the online system to view a student's balance and account history as well as add Jack Bucks to the account. Jack Bucks are safe and convenient. The money is accessed through the swipe of a student's ID card, so there is no need to carry cash, checks or other credit cards. If the ID card is lost or stolen, it can be deactivated on the Web, 24 hours a day. Students can also get up-to-the minute Web statements that show the transaction history of the account. Jack Bucks can be used to purchase goods and services at all participating locations, as well as many departments and services around campus. One of the most influential factors in choosing a college is the cost. SFA offers excellent educational opportunities at a cost below the average for Texas state universities. Tuition and fees are calculated by the numbers of hours in which your student is enrolled. Departmental and other scholarships, as well as federal and state financial assistance, are processed through the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Your student also may want to seek employment on campus. Student position openings are posted in the Student Employment Office. SFA has residence halls and apartments for students. Living on campus is one of the best and most memorable experiences of your student's college career. Students with less than 60 hours or who are younger than 21 years of age live on campus and have the opportunity to live the full college experience. Living on campus is a great way to get involved and meet other students. Residence Life and the Student Activities Association are very active on campus and offer many fun programs and activities for all students. See the Admissions Web site for admissions requirements and application forms or submit an online request for admissions information. You can check the deadlines for registration in the Office of the Registrar. The General and Graduate Bulletins/course catalogs contain a list of all courses in all departments, course descriptions and course requirements by major. Once classes have been selected, check the class schedule to see when they are offered. Yes, incoming freshmen attend a summer orientation session where they can meet faculty and students from their major department or area of interest, get academic advising, explore the campus and register early for classes. New students also can attend Jack Camp to meet other students and faculty on a social level. Your student may be interested in SFA101, an incoming freshman course designed to connect students and faculty and provide more comprehensive information about life at SFA and strategies for success. The Office of Development provides various ways for parents to contribute to SFA.
