Department of Modern Languages
Requirements for ExCET

Students in Modern Languages wishing to take TOPT must achieve a ranking of "Advanced" on the Department's pre-TOPT in the one-hour 475 preparation course. (See College of Liberal Arts ExCET Requirements and Department of Modern Languages ExCET Requirements.)


Outcomes and Remediation

Successful Outcome

Upon successful completion of the ExCET requirements, students will be issued bar codes that will allow them to take the TOPT.

Unsuccessful Outcome
Students who do not reach the minimum standards on the pre-TOPT will receive a WH in the one-hour 475 course and may retake the test after remedial work. Students whould be aware that WH converts to F after one year.

 

Remediation
Students who make below 80% on the pre-TOPT will take an advanced course or courses corresponding ot the area(s) of unsatisfactory performance.

Students who do not achieve Advanced level on the TOPT may

- Enroll in a onversation course or a study abroad program.
- Attend Java Jack's conversation sessions.
- View the Destinos or French in Action video series in the Learning and Resource Center.
- Use other materials at the LRC to enhance oral communication skills.
- Engage in regular/daily conversations with native speakers (Spanish/French).
- Watch TV/Listen to radio programs in Spanish or French.
- Listen to music and other audio resources in Spanish or French.
