French or Spanish 131 is normally the first course in
the language sequence. However, for students who have
previously studied French or Spanish the department offers
a placement test free of charge at the beginning of each
semester. On the basis of the score earned on the test,
the Modern Language Advisor will recommend a course commensurate
with the student's level of proficiency in the language.
The test is for placement only and carries no credit.
Any student who begins at a level higher than 131 can
earn credits for all the courses bypassed once she or
he has completed the higher level course with a "C" or
better.
Students may
earn by-pass credits for as many as 17 hours of lower
division courses. Courses for which students may earn
bypass credits include French and Spanish 131,132, 231,232,
and Spanish 235. In the case of Spanish 235, the student
must earn an A or a high B in Spanish 320 with the recommendation
of the instructor to earn the credits.
Bypass credit
hours apply to the student's language requirement, to
the hours needed to complete a major or minor in French
or Spanish, and
to the total number of hours needed to complete a Bachelor's
degree at SFA.
