General Description

Students may major or minor in French or Spanish. Those students who wish to graduate with a major in French or Spanish must complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Students wishing to obtain a teaching certificate should consult the appropriate program in the College of Education. Teaching fields are offered in French and Spanish. Students with a major or minor in Spanish may acquire either a second teaching field (secondary education) or specialization area (elementary education) in bilingual education. Those seeking such certification must complete specific courses in education, Spanish, English, History, and Sociology.

The Department of Modern Languages encourages all students, majors and non-majors, to integrate language study with their other areas of academic interest. Certain courses in Spanish satisfy both requirements for the language major and for bilingual certification.

The Latin American Studies minor offers an interdisciplinary program including courses in Spanish, History, Political Science, Geography, and Sociology. Many students in disciplines outside the College of Liberal Arts (international business and law enforcement, for example) find a second major in language particularly useful in preparing for their careers and increasing their job opportunities. A course in Spanish for the professions focuses on structures and vocabulary necessary for effective communication in job situations.
