Requirements for Admission
For detailed information about the types of admission see the Graduate Bulletin - Catalog. Some programs have higher admission standards than those on this page. Contact the program advisor for more information.

Transcripts
You must submit official transcripts from each college/university attended to the Graduate Office at least 30 days prior to entering. SFA will accept credit or recognize degrees only from institutions accredited by one of the regional accrediting bodies.

Coursework
You must have 18 semester hours of undergraduate work in the field you wish to study or 18 semester hours of closely related work approved by the appropriate academic department. Some programs allow you to take their background courses after admission. Contact the program advisor for more information.

Undergraduate students at SFA who are seeking Overlap admission must have completed at least 95 semester hours of undergraduate credit.

Grade Point Average
You must have a 2.5/4.0 overall Grade Point Average (exclusive of freshmen level courses).

If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, it is possible to be admitted on a probationary status. You should contact the department advisor to see if your GRE scores and/or combination of other factors might meet the requirements for admission.

Test Scores

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Some programs require acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. To determine which programs require a GRE, see Programs and Degrees. SFA does not have a minimum GRE score requirement for admission, but generally, acceptable scores are approximately 450 to 500 on each of the verbal and quantitative sections of the test. Many departments look closely at the GRE results in making their admissions decisions.

If you will be taking graduate courses for the purpose of qualifying for a graduate degree program, certification, professional development, or personal enrichment (Post-Baccalaureate admission), the GRE is not required.

The score many be derived from either: (a) Overall GPA x 200 + GMAT > 950 or (b) Upper Level GPA x 200 + GMAT > 1000. No probationary or provisional admission is permitted in either the MBA or Professional Accountancy programs.
