The Graduate Council met at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2004 in Room 307, Austin Building.  Dr. Dahmus made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 26, 2004 meeting.  Dr. Eastman seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

  1. Announcements
    The Graduate School has moved to the Liberal Arts North Building, Room 423. There will be an open house on April 21, 2004, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  2. Old Business
    1. Philosophy 490G
      A new syllabus was submitted to the Graduate Council.  Dr. Oswald made a motion to approve.  Dr. Harris seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
    2. Graduate Faculty membership for Dr. Barbara Nykiel-Herbert
      Additional information was submitted to the Graduate Council for review.  Dr. Oswald made a motion to accept Dr. Nykiel-Herbert for associate membership in the Secondary Education Department.  Dr. Kenner seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
    3. Ph.D. in Environmental Science
      Discussion took place regarding the proposal for the Environmental Science Ph.D. program.  Dean Atchison led the discussion with input from Dr. Calloway, Ms. Whiting, Dr. Williams, Dr. Young and Dr. Roberts.  After all questions had been asked and discussion came to a close, the visitors left the room.  Dr. Oliver then made a motion to approve the program.  Dr. Kenner seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
  3. New Business
    1. Marilyn Odom Outstanding Graduate Student Award
      There has been one nomination for the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.  All of the information pertaining to this award will be mailed to the council members and a vote will be taken by email.
    2. William R. Johnson Outstanding Thesis Award
      There have been no nominations for the Outstanding Thesis Award. The Graduate Office will extend the deadline for nominations until April 9. 2004.

Dr. Dahmus made a motion to adjourn.  The Dr. Oliver seconded the motion.  The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
