The Graduate Council met at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2005 in room 307, Austin Building.  Dr. Oswald made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 27, 2005 meeting.  Dr. Tinsley seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

  1. Announcements
    1. New Registrar's Office Hours
      The Registrar’s Office will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:00- 6:00 p.m. to better serve students, alumni, faculty and staff.
    2. Award Nominations
      The information for award nominations for the Marilyn Odom Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the William R. Johnson Outstanding Thesis Award is located on My SFA web site.  The Alumni Association will honor the outstanding graduate student for the 2004-2005.  The winner will receive a small cash award and recognition by the Alumni Association.  The completed nomination forms and supporting letters of recommendation need to be in the Graduate Office by March 23, 2005.

      The William R. Johnson Outstanding Thesis Award winner will be announced at the May 2005 commencement.  The winner and thesis director will be acknowledged in the commencement program and the winner will receive a plaque from the Graduate School.  Please submit a copy of the thesis selected from your department (only one per department) along with a nomination form explaining how the thesis fulfills the criteria to the Graduate Office on or before March 23, 2005.
  2. Old Business
    1. Student Affairs
      The Student Affairs Committee met with Sarah Greer on February 15, 2005 to discuss possible changes in updating the web design for the Graduate School.  Many of the changes have already been implemented on a trial basis.
    2. Faculty Affairs Committee
      Discussion took place regarding tenure as an additional requirement for full membership for graduate faculty.  Discussion was tabled until the next meeting.
    3. Academic Affairs Committee
      Dr. Oswald made a motion to accept the course proposals and changes with the exception of GEO 504, PHI 400G and PHI 410G which were tabled until additional information could be obtained.  Dr. Tinsley seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
  3. New Business
    1. Request for Graduate Minor in Spatial Science
      A minor in Spatial Science would provide a foundation for any student pursuing a Master of Science that will allow a student to become proficient in applying geospatial technologies to find solutions to environmental problems, issues and concerns relating to land and water resources and occupational and environmental health.   All of the courses are currently being offered and faculty members are in place to teach the courses and there will be no additional library acquisitions.  Dr. Oswald made a motion to approve the minor in Spatial Science.  Dr. Clack seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
    2. Graduate Faculty Applications
      Dr. Jeffrey has reviewed and given administrative approval to the following Graduate Faculty membership applications:

    Dr. Oswald made a motion to accept the membership applications as presented.  Dr. Tinsley seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

Dr. Hearell made a motion to adjourn.  Dr. Clack seconded the motion.  The meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
