Classical Literary Studies

Program Director--Dr. Owen Smith

The minor consists of a total 18 semester hours (= 6 classes) divided into four separate components.

First, students must complete an introductory literature component, which consists of ENG 211 (World Literature: Ancient through the Renaissance) and ENG 300 (Mythology).  Together, these two classes account for 6 of the 18 semester hours.

Second, students must complete a classical language component, which consists of the study of a classical language through the intermediate level.  Students may meet this requirement by taking LAT 231 (Intermediate Latin I) and LAT 232 (Intermediate Latin II) or by taking GRK 231 (Intermediate Classical Greek I) and GRK 232 (Intermediate Classical Greek II).  Together, these two classes account for 6 of the 18 semester hours.

Third, students must complete an advanced literature component, which consists of a single course, either ENG 306 (Periods in World Literature) or ENG 348 (Travel and Literature) or ENG 405 (Topics in Comparative World Literature).  These three courses are topics courses that can focus on a wide range of literature; in order for these courses to count towards the Classical Literary Studies minor, these courses must focus on some facet of classical literature.  This class accounts for 3 of the 18 semester hours.

Finally, students must complete a general classical studies component, which consists of a single course with a focus on classical culture.  This course can be drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including art, literature, history, philosophy, political science, and theatre.  This class accounts for 3 of the 18 semester hours.
