An Exciting Future in Communication and Contemporary Culture!

Welcome to the Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture at Stephen F. Austin State University. We hope you will travel with us as we explore the complexities of communication and the world around us.

The Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture houses the former Department of Communication, which has a long history at Stephen F. Austin and can claim more than 6,000 graduates who have gone on to exciting careers in a variety of fields. In addition to the former Department of Communication, the Division houses the Philosophy program from the former Department of English and Philosophy. Within the Division are two exciting programs offering B.A. and B.S. degrees: Communication Studies and Global Media and Contemporary Culture. The Communication Studies program offers concentrations in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, media studies, public communication, and a secondary education track for students wishing to teach communication in high school. The Global Media and Contemporary Culture program offers majors in journalism, philosophy and radio/television. Concentrations in the Global Media and Contemporary Culture program include: advertising, digital photography, public relations, news writing, radio and television broadcast and/or sales, and philosophy. As you can see, we have a lot to offer majors and minors who join our programs. More information about each of these exciting programs is available on the program websites.

Each of the programs offers courses that aim to prepare students to think clearly, lead ethically, communicate effectively, and imagine creatively in an increasingly complex global environment. Both programs offer internships aimed at applying the abstract concepts taught in real world experiences. We have a nationally recognized IPDA debate program and a student newspaper that earned the award for the top Division II newspaper in the state at Texas Intercollegiate Press Association's annual spring convention. In addition to debate, students can participate in student organizations associated with division including: Lambda Pi Eta “the Communication Honor Society,” the National Association of Broadcasters, and Women and Men in Communication. Our programs offer a wide array of research, theory and practical application courses that work in concert to prepare students to be successful in a vibrant global society.

Additionally, the Division of Communication & Contemporary Culture offers graduate students an M.A. in Communication. The Master’s degree is a general communication degree that prepares students for further education and/or careers in a variety of communication specialties.
