Chemistry 551
Course Objective: The
relationship among topics in biochemistry will be explained.
Advanced Biochemistry
Student
Outcome Objectives: The student is expected to demonstrate
detailed/advanced understanding of the following topics in biochemistry.
- DNA
structural forms, structure/function of DNA polymerases, enzymes that
assist in replication.
- Structure/function
of RNA polymerases, proteins that assist in transcription, and
post-transcriptional modification.
- Ribosomal
structure and function, proteins involved in translation, protein
sorting/trafficking, and post transcriptional modification.
- Regulation
methods of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
- Compare/contrast
biochemical methods of genetic manipulation and demonstrate and awareness
of ethical issues that arise.
- Correlate
current biochemical literature with topics in class.
- Communicate
(orally and writing) biochemical concepts
at an advanced level
