About the Campus
Profile
Stephen F. Austin State University is located in Nacogdoches,
Texas, approximately 180 miles east of Dallas via Interstate 20 and
140 miles north of Houston via U.S. highway 59. The university, established as a teacher's college, conducted the first classes in September 1923. It currently
enrolls more than 11,000 graduate and undergraduate students in 93 bachelor's,
61 master's and two doctoral programs. [more].
Mission
The mission of Stephen F. Austin State University is to
provide students a foundation for success, a passion for learning,
and a commitment to responsible
global
citizenship, in a community dedicated to teaching, research, creativity
and service.
Location
The main campus is located in the Pineywoods of East Texas
and includes 360 acres in the heart of Nacogdoches, part of the original
homestead of Thomas J. Rusk, an early Texas patriot and United States
senator. The main campus includes 28 instructional buildings and 15
residence halls and apartments. In addition, the university maintains
a university farm of 490 acres for beef, poultry and swine production and an equine center;
an experimental forest and a forestry field station on Lake Sam Rayburn.
