THE SFA BROPHY CENTER

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.  ~Robert Collier

The SFASU Brophy Center is a unique living-learning center designed to meet the academic needs of residential students in Mays Hall & Hall 10.  A computer lab, a printer, study rooms, tutoring for selected courses, and an academic advisor are provided.   The Brophy Center is an academic enrichment and student success program sponsored by the SFA Office of Academic Affairs, in partnership with the SFA Housing Department.

Students who live in Hall 10 or Mays Hall sign a “contract” each Fall & Spring Semester, indicating that they understand the requirement to complete study hours each week based on their GPA.  Beginning Freshman complete 9 study hours per week.  Once a student establishes a GPA (based on credit earned at SFA), the current GPA then serves as the basis for the number of required study hours per week. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are exempt from required study hours, but may still utilize the academic support services of the Brophy Center.  The Brophy Center’s programs are not available in the Summer; the Brophy Center, however, may be open on a limited basis to support the Pathways Program.

The Director of the Brophy Center is Dr. J.B. Watson, Jr., who also serves as a faculty member in the SFA Sociology Department.  He is available to meet with students regarding their academic concerns, & holds office hours in the Brophy Center each week.  The Brophy Center is also staffed by Academic Peer Mentors, upper division SFA students who interact with residents on a daily basis, & encourage them in their pursuit of success in the classroom.  Academic Peer Mentors also provide tutoring for selected SFA classes.

The Brophy Center is located on the north end of the first floor of Mays Hall.  There are two entrances to the Brophy Center - through the breezeway between Mays & Hall 10, & off the Mays Hall lobby (to the right).  The Brophy Center Office is located in Mays Hall Room 106.  The Brophy Center is open during the Fall & Spring Semesters from Sunday - Friday. Hours of operation are: S 2-10 PM, M-TH 11 AM-Midnight, & F 11 AM-3 PM.  Pathways students should contact the Pathways Program to verify the Summer schedule for the Brophy Center.
