Ecology & Evolutionary Biology

The ecology and evolutionary biology program integrates ecology, functional morphology, phylogeny, behavior, and genetics in natural populations and model organisms to study evolutionary patterns and processes. Courses are designed to have appropriate overlap with other components of the core so that students develop a foundational knowledge and understanding of ecological and evolutionary principles and practices. The ecology and evolutionary biology program includes faculty with dynamic research interests and expertise. With the opportunity to work closely with a diversified core of faculty and an emphasis on applied learning, this program should appeal to students interested in a variety of topics that seek to become well-rounded and well versed students and scientists.

Study sites and facilities used in teaching and research by participants in the ecology and evolutionary biology group include the following.

• SFA Experimental Forest
• Angelina, Davy Crockett and Sabine National Forests
• SFA Natural History Collections
• SFA molecular biology facilities
• Vivarium
• Research and teaching labs that include equipment such as high speed video, radiography, treadmill, O2 analyzer, environmental chambers, digital photography, and many smaller items (e.g., mammal traps, GPS, etc.) for use in field research.
