Robert S. Stewart, Jr., Ph.D.
Pre-Professional Programs

 

Dr. Stewart received his B.S. and M.S. in Microbiology from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis.

Commissioned in the Regular Army Medical Service Corps in May 1974. Various assignments included Student Officer (Long Term Civilian Training) for Master’s Degree (1974-1976) and for Doctoral Degree (1983-1986); directing Reference Immunology and Bacteriology labs at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA (1976-80); assisting in the U.S. Army Blood Program Office at Fort Sam Houston, TX (1980); directing the Clinical Microbiology Service at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas (1981-1983); and directing Clinical Investigation Microbiology Research at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado (1986-1991), and at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington (1991-1994). Distinguished Graduate of the Medical Service Basic Course, Graduate of the Medical Service Career Course, and Graduate of the Command and General Staff College. Recipient of the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal (with oak leaf), and awarded the Expert Field Medical Badge. Retired from Active Duty in June 1994.

Past Research Interests:

The immune responses to viruses, including human and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, BRSV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Rapid detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its role in cervical cancer.
Host-parasite interactions between environmental amoeba and human pathogenic bacteria, especially Legionella.

Distribution of the human parasites Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium in East Texas Water supplies.

The epidemiology of respiratory viruses (RSV, influenza virus, adenovirus, and rhinovirus) on the SFA campus.

Developing newer methods associated with viral culturing and PCR detection.
