For the past 31 years, Miller has overseen a comprehensive Athletic Training program which included preparing our students for careers as Athletic Trainers, as well as caring for thousands of our student-athletes.

A native of Larned, Kansas, a 1972 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and a 1973 graduate of Northwest Missouri State Univesity, he then became the Head Athletic Trainer at Pampa ISD. After returning for five seasons as the head athletic trainer at Northwest Missouri State, he came to Nacogdoches and SFA in 1981.

Miller served as a member of the board of directors of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). He has served on the Athletic Training staff at the 1990 Goodwill Games and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, as well as serving as the Athletic Trainer for USA Track & Field at the World Championships in Sweden, in 1995. He also represented Texas and Arkansas as district director for the NATA. In 1999, Miller was honored as a Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer, one of 12 in the country, by the NATA. Miller is also a member of Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame. During the summer of 2002, Sandy received the highest honor of an Athletic Trainer, induction into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in Dallas. In 2007, Sandy was a finalist for the position of NATA President. In 2011, Sandy was again honored by the NATA, this time with the Gatorade Tim Kerin Award (link) .

Miller and his wife Madalene are the parents of two sons, Justin, and Doug, and the grandparents of Karen Grace, JuliAnne Hope, Halie Elizabeth, and Madison Jane.

Sanford (Sandy) E. Miller, M.Ed, ATC, LAT

Created in July 2012, the "Sandy Miller Award" will be presented annually to the Athletic Training student who has been judged the most outstanding over the course of the academic year. The award will be presented during the department's annual Champions Dinner.
