Named in honor of the first Athletic Trainer in SFA history, the
Joe Richardson Most Distinguished Athletic Training Award
was established by the Organization of Athletic Training Students (OATS).

The award is to be given to alumni who have distinguished themselves in the field of Athletic Training.

Mike Waters:

From Cleveland, TX., Coach Joe served as the Track Coach and Athletic Trainer at SFA during the late 1960's and early '70's. From 1973 - 1980, he continued as the Head Athletic Trainer, responsible for the creation of one of the first accredited undergraduate AT curriculums.
(the program was dissolved in the early 1980's due to NATABOC restrictions, but reorganized in 2002)
An avid outdoorsman who raised bird dogs, Coach Joe was grandfathered as a nationally certified and Texas state licensed Athletic Trainer.

On July 19, 2007, John Huskey and Gordon Graham
