What is the Alcohol Education/Minor in Possession Program, and when is it offered?

Section 106.115, Alcoholic Beverage Code, requires minors convicted of first or subsequent offenses for the purchase, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages to attend an alcohol awareness class approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services, in addition to assessing a fine. The class is six hours in length, broken up into two sessions of three hours each.  You must attend the complete six-hour class including all phases of the approved curriculum and final exam, in order to receive a certificate of completion. No partial credit will be given. The curriculum contains information on the following topics: societal values related to alcohol consumption by minors, the influence of alcohol advertising on young people, the physical, social and psychological effects of alcohol upon young people; the relationship between motor vehicle and other accidents and alcohol use; relevant laws relating to the purchase, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors, drinking patterns and problems of young people including abuse and addiction and decision making skills. Failure to complete the alcohol awareness class or community service within 90 days of conviction will result in a license suspension of up to 6 months.


When is the AEP training available?

The AEP class is taught monthly on the Stephen F. Austin State University Campus in Ferguson #471. The classes are held one week each month, on Wednesday evening from 5:30 - 8:30p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:00a.m. - 12:00p.m.

[STUDENTS MUST ATTEND BOTH CLASSES TO BE GIVEN CREDIT AND RECEIVE THEIR CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION].

** If a student does not complete both sessions, they will NOT receive their certificate of completion and will be required to reregister and pay and additional $50.00, to attend an upcoming class. Once the student registers a second time and does not complete the class, or fails to attend, they will not be eligible to take the class at this site in the future No refund will be given to those students.


Instructor Information?

Ms. Joy Rhodes, of Rhodes of Texas - MIP [rhodesoftexas@yahoo.com] teaches the classes on the SFA campus. Ms. Rhodes has been an employee of Stephen F. Austin State University for 15 years. She is in her eighth year of employment with the Department of Government (Criminal Justice). Ms. Rhodes was certified as administrator/instructor for the Alcohol Education Program, through the Department of State Health Services in 2006. The program is owned by Ms. Rhodes and taught on the campus through Community Services. She is familiar with current issues and possesses a working knowledge of rules and regulations, pertaining to juvenile and minor issues.


What is the cost and what do I need to bring to the class?

Cost for the class is $50.00 - CASH ONLY. Bring correct payment at the time of registration, as we do not provide change. You must register and pay in the Department of Government (Criminal Justice), Liberal Arts North, #410. Student must bring the name and address of their court/judge when they come to register . They will not be registered for the class until all paperwork is completed and payment is received. We can accommodate only a certain number of students per class and students are registered on a first come basis .

Please plan to arrive at the classroom about 10 minutes prior to class start time in case the instructor needs additional information. 

     No one may enter the room once the class begins.     


Rules Of Operation and Conduct
:

A student or prospective student may be dismissed or barred from the class for tardiness, drunkenness or consumption of alcohol on the premises; rude, vulgar or disruptive behavior in the classroom;  smoking in the classroom; or being generally inattentive (sleeping, reading, etc.) during class. A student dismissed or terminated for violating rules of conduct will not be readmitted to the class. No refund will be given to those students dismissed by the instructor and the student will not be eligible to take the class at this site in the future.
