The Department of Communication has two objectives: (1) The education of students in the history, science, and art of communication, and (2) the preparation of students for professional careers.

Majors are offered that lead to either a B.A. degree or to a B.S. degree. Students in the department may concentrate their course work in Journalism, Radio/TV or Speech Communication. Students may also obtain certification to teach speech communication and journalism in the public schools. Additionally, the graduate program offers an M.A. in communication.

The department brings the student's general and liberal education into focus by organizing it upon a framework of communication as a science, an art, and a service. The educational mission of the department is to develop in students oral, written, and visual communication skills for application in a variety of social and professional settings. SFASU communication faculty recognize the essential role of communication in the preservation and enhancement of human life.
